Permanent makeup is also known as permanent cosmetics, semi-permanent makeup, micro pigmentation or cosmetic tattooing. This is a procedure whereby minute particles of colour pigments are implanted no more than 1mm below the skin surface, using a digital machine that holds a sterile needle grouping. The depth can vary depending on which area of the face is being pigmented, and skin type.
Unlike a conventional tattoo where pigment is implanted into the skin at a deeper level, below the exfoliating layers of the skin, spmu (Semi Permanent Makeup) is implanted at a more shallow depth, depending on the area of the skin where colour is being implanted. The other main difference is SPMU artists use pigments, versus tattoo ink. Both have different ingredients and different particle sizes.
