What Is Osteopathy?

Osteopathy is the practice of injury treatment that utilises the relationships between our muscles and joints. Through osteopathy the human body’s structure and function is understood by the smooth running of the skeleton, muscles and ligaments functioning smoothly and in harmony with each other.

An osteopath aims to ensure that the structure of your body works well by incorporating a state of balance without the use of drugs or surgery. Through the use of physical manipulation, stretching and massage an osteopath aims to increase mobility whilst also relieving muscle tension.

As a result of these two factors, your pain levels will be noticeably reduced in your injury. Blood supply to these tissues is stimulated through this process thus helping the body to heal. By encouraging the body to heal itself through its natural processes, osteopathy not only hopes to promote healing but also prevent symptoms from reoccurring. Here at Mind, Body and Soul we provide osteopathy treatments to everyone in the Colchester area, helping them to recover from injuries and improve their overall wellbeing.
OSTEOPATHY
How does Osteopathy Work?

Once your general health and symptoms have been determined, the osteopath will use their hands to find general areas of weakness, tenderness, restriction or strain within your body, with a focus on and around the spine. Once these areas have been identified, the osteopath will outline the techniques that will be used to help you.

Through massage, the muscles around the injury can be relaxed allowing blood to run more easily through them, promoting healing. The same effect is achieved through articulation by taking joints through their natural range of motion. As muscles become used to this motion, they will heal properly in accordance with how they are supposed to move.

Finally, a high-velocity thrust may be used to produce a short, sharp movement through the spine which produces a clicking noise. The treatment itself is not usually painful although some soreness is to be expected for particularly painful injuries. On your visit to our Colchester clinic, your Osteopath will be able to go into more detail that is specific to you.

What does Osteopathy Treat?

Predominantly, osteopathy is generally focused around back problems and back pain. Back problems extend upwards as the spine runs down the length of our body and puts a lot of work in supporting our upright posture. Back pain, neck pain and headaches are often all related and osteopathy can help with all three by treating the spine.

Furthermore, as we get older, our joints weaken, causing more issues in our backs and necks. Through osteopathy we can invigorate and strengthen the spine in our Colchester clinic.
What to expect at your Osteopathy Treatment?

Initial consultation

During your initial consultation in our Colchester clinic, your osteopath will ask you a series of questions to determine your symptoms, any potential causes and whether osteopathy is going to be right for you. Once this has all been confirmed, the osteopath will ask you to remove a piece of clothing to perform their examination.

If you’re uncomfortable with this please let your osteopath know so they can give you necessary privacy and be respectful with your body. Once the examination is complete you’ll be given the opportunity to dress yourself and the osteopath will observe you performing basic movements such as stretches to get a clear look at your posture and your mobility.

The first appointment generally lasts for around 45 minutes with subsequent appointments lasting for around 30 minutes. Should your osteopath locate something that they can’t treat they will refer you to a GP with a note explaining what they believe the problem to be.

During Treatment

Once the osteopath in our Colchester clinic has determined what it is that is causing you so much pain, they will set out a treatment plan for you in the hopes of preventing musculoskeletal disorders. Your osteopath will then explain what these treatments are going to achieve and how many sessions are going to be needed to achieve this.

The treatment itself is a skilled manipulation of the spine and joints as well as the massage of soft tissues. Throughout the sessions your osteopath will constantly explain what they are doing and how it is helping, whilst asking you if you’re happy to continue with the process. If you have any questions during the sessions at all your osteopath will be more than happy to answer.

After Treatment

Since the treatment is quite physical, it’s expected to feel some soreness after the first 24-48 hours of treatment, in a similar way to how you may feel after a workout! The muscles have been stimulated in such a way that they take some time to repair, this is the healing process we mentioned. When you leave our Colchester clinic your osteopath will explain any reactions you’re likely to have following treatment. If you have any concerns about the pain then please don’t hesitate to contact your osteopath. At the end of each session, your osteopath will review your progress and adjust the treatment accordingly if necessary.
